Jamuna marks rise in Sirajganj, 2 lakh marooned

Waters in the River Jamuna continued to rise in Sirajganj district, leaving about two lakh people in five upazilas marooned.

Water level in the Jamuna River rose by 8cm at Hard Point in last 24 hours and is flowing 99 centimeters above the danger level at Sirajganj point.

About two lakh people got stuck at 950 villages in five upazilas of the district. 

A total of 225 educational institutions remained closed due to the flood.

Meanwhile, two blocks of Sirajganj town protection embankment slide in Hard Point area on Thursday night, sending a wave of panic among the residents.

The officials of Water Development Board are trying to save the embankment dumping blocks and sandbags.

The authorities concern asked the people not to be panicked.

Water Resources Secretary Kabir-bin-Anwar visited the Hard Point area and others flood affected area in the district Friday.

While visiting, he said all possible steps will be taken to protect the lives and property of the town dwellers from the erosion by the Jamuna River.
