Fisheries Week-2019 begins
Fish production increases
RANGPUR, July 17: Fish production in the district has been increasing by 3,500 tonnes annually over the last five consecutive years.
Fish production in the district during 2018-2019 year was 53,053 tonnes, of which was 35,600 tonnes five years back, said a press conference held here on Wednesday marking the National Fisheries Week -2019.
District Fisheries Officer Barun Chandra Biswas highlighted the success achieved in the fishery sector. However, the district is still lagging far behind of total demand of the people for 63,095 tonnes of fish a year, he said.
Speakers called for making the Fisheries Week a complete success to make people aware about the best use of water bodies and transferring latest technologies to farmers to enhance fish production.
They also laid importance on protection of native, small and indigenous varieties.
