Sonargaon- The Golden City

Sonargaon- The Golden City

Sonargaon situated in the centre of present day Bangladesh was a historic administrative, commercial, maritime centre in the then East Bengal and was the royal seat of medieval Muslim rulers and governors ofEastern Bengal. Sonargaon has been described by numerous historic travellers, including IbnBattutta, Ma Huan, NiccolÚ de' Conti and Ralph Fitch, as a thriving centre of trade and commerce. The area is located near the modern industrial river port of Narayanganj in Bangladesh. Today, the name Sonargaon survives as the SonargaonUpazila (Sonargaonsub-district) in the country.

Sonargaon- The Golden City

As we go by the very known and familiar proverb "Old is Gold" such is Sonargaon with its beautiful features, adorable buildings and its beautifully crafted doors and buildingsetc. which make the place worthy of visit at least once in a lifetime. Sonargaon in Bengali means Village of Gold and though it is old, it is still gold. So I with my parents and ambassador of Norway and his husband decided to visit Sonargaon. We went by car and started our journey at 10 am and reached at 11:30 am and as there was jam on the roadwe reached a little late. Even though it was very hot everyone was excited. We entered PanamNagar, we clicked beautiful pictures of the beautiful, old and adorable buildings which were built very long ago. Sonargaon is a thousand years old ancient urban settlement and was also one of the capitals and river ports of East Bengal (now Bangladesh). As for the architectural design of these buildings, European artistic skills have been blended with those of the Mughals. Simply, gazing at the wonderfully built buildings just made my day.

We had lots of enjoyment in taking pictures and looking at the wonderfully built buildings. After that we ate in a local hotel and the food was great out there. So after that we bid adieu to PanamNagar and Sonargaon and came back to Dhaka. I loved how the Ambassador and his husband behaved with us. They were very friendly and they loved to watch all the beautiful buildings and they had great fun too going over there. It was the third time for me there and I am surely likely to go many more times.
