Drug dealer killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

COX'S BAZAR, July 15:  A suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf Upazila of the district early Sunday.
Deceased Mufid Alam, 39, was a resident of Noyapara area in the upazila. He was an accused in several cases including drugs and arms, with different police stations in the district.
Earlier on Saturday night, police detained Mufid, and they along with him conducted a drive in Nayapara area near the Naf River to seize a big consignment of yaba.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Mufid's cohorts opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.
Later, police found Mufid bullet-hit injured and took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Police also recovered 10 rounds of fresh cartridge of short gun and 5,000 yaba tablets from the spot, Officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station Pradip Kumar said.
