350m dyke goes under water at Charramani

LAXMIPUR, July 15: Heavy rainfall and high tide in the   Meghna River broke down about 350-metre dyke at Charramani Mohan under Sadar Upazila of the district recently. So the people of the area are now living in a fear.
Water Development Board gave Tk 70 lakh to build the dyke again. Though the contractors started the work, it was stopped because of heavy rainfall during the last few days and tide water.
A victim, Rahela Begum of Charramani Mohan,  said, till now her house has broken four times. Now she took shelter on the dyke, but again it broke.
Ismail Hossain's wife Fahima living in the same area said, their house went under water 15 days back. Now they took shelter in the house of a neighbourhood. They are suffering badly with their six children.
After visiting the area on Sunday, it was seen high tide was breaking the houses and crop fields. People are becoming homeless. If this situation continues, the whole east Charramani Mohan Village will go under water.
According to sources at the WDB office, from Mozu Chowdhury to Matirhaat, 12km shore was protected by the dyke. But from the beginning of the rainy season, roads and crop fields and houses went under the water. Tide water and heavy rainfall made the erosion extreme.
To save the people of the affected area, Tk 64 lakh was given urgently to make the dam again.
Samia and Rajia Ahammed are the two contractors who get the responsibility to do the work. The contractor sources said they cannot the work due to rainfall and tide. However, they will complete the work in the next month.

Water Development Board (WDB) informed, Tk 38 lakh was spent to make 175m dyke in Charramani area last year.
The locals complained the contractors used cheap materials, for which the dam went under water after completion of the work.
The same contractors again got the work, so the people of the area are unsatisfied.
Md. Imtiaz, the owner of Samia Enterprise, denied the allegation and said, "I have worked spending Tk 38 lakh and still did not get the bill. This year we have started the work of Tk 64 lakh by the order of the authority. But because of heavy rainfall and tide, the workers cannot do the work."
UP Member of east Charramani Mohan area Khorshed Alam said, "As the dam broke down, the area went under water. So the people of the area are suffering a lot. The domestic animals and crop fields are destroyed, and people also suffer from diseases."
Executive Engineer of Laxmipur WDB Md. Musa said, this year 350m dyke has broken. So Tk 64 lakh was given to two contractors urgently; they started the work, but, due to adverse weather, they cannot continue.
