ECNEC to approve massive rural dev project today

The government has decided to develop new infrastructure in rural area across the country implementing schemes like "My Village My Town" along with new road and bridges connectivity and massive digital transformation of the rural society.
For that the Local Government Rural Division (LGRD) Ministry has taken a development project for 67 Upazilas in 13 districts in the Dhaka Division to improve local connectivity roads, culverts and others. The local government has taken a project title is 'Rural Connectivity Improvement Project' worth is Tk 2,606 crore.
Similar projects for other divisions are under processing.
The government has emphasis infrastructure development and planned urbanisation of villages will receive priority of the government in the budget for the current fiscal year (FY).
Planning Minister MA Mannan said, "Most of the major infrastructure projects are entering the final stage of implementation. At this stage, it will be important to allocate more resources for these."
The Minister also informed that the 'Amar Gram Amar Shohor' (My Village My Town) scheme has been taken in keeping with the election promise of Awami League for massive rural development.
He said, "We will go for planned urbanisation of the villages to rebuild rural markets, growth centers and other establishments in a way that will save precious land."
The sources said the Rural Government Ministry has already sent the rural development project proposal to the Planning Commission while Pre-Evaluation Committee (PEC) has assessed the proposal.
The sources said the project is likely to be placed before the meeting of the Executive Committee the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday for final approval.
According to project proposal, Tk 1.45 crore is expenditure has been earmarked for development of every kilomitre of important Upazilas and union parishads roads of Dhaka division.
Under the project, over 1001.5 kilometre roads will be improved and renovated. For this, the cost has been estimated at Tk 452.18 crore. Bridge-culverts will be constructed and repaired totaling over 5,567 meters. The cost of this work has been earmarked Tk 644.28 crore.
A total Tk 30.75 crore will be spent as consultant fees in this project.
