Bride-groom among 11 killed as train hits microbus in Sirajganj
At least 11 people, including the bride and groom, were killed when a train rammed into a microbus, carrying a bridal party, on an unattended rail crossing in Ullapara of Sirajganj on Monday evening.
Six people were injured in the accident that took place at Betkandi rail crossing in Panchakroshi area at about 6:45pm. Witnesses said the Dhaka-bound 'Padma Express' dragged the microbus a kilometre following the crash.
The deceased were identified as bridegroom Rajon, 25, of Kaliakandapara village in Sadar upazila, bride Sumaiya Khatun, 20, microbus driver Swadhin, 28, of Jamtail village in Kamarkhand upazila, Md Shariful Islam, Musa, Tutul, Khokon, Mamata, Bayazid, of Sarderpara in municipality; Vasa of Kazipara in Ullapara, and Abdul Ahad, of Saidhangora Mahalla in municipality.
Police and firefighters recovered the bodies and rescued the injured.
Officer-in-charge of Sirajganj Government Railway Police Station Harun Majumder said the Dhaka-bound train from Rajshahi, 'Padma Express', crashed into the microbus around 6:45pm while it was trying to cross the rail tracks through the level crossing.
The accident left five microbus passengers dead on the spot and four others died on the way to the hospital, he said.
Ullapara Police Station Sub-Inspector Mosharraf Hossain said the injured are undergoing treatment at local hospitals.
Meanwhile, acting Deputy Commissioner of the district M Tafazzal Hossain directed for providing financial assistance to family members of the victims.
A pall of gloom descended on the locality following the tragic accident.
