Two killed in Kaptai landslide

CHATTOGRAM, July 13: Heavy rain on Saturday inundated the most parts of Chattogram city. The affected areas are Bakalia, Chandgaon, Bahadderhat, Chawk Bazar, Badurtala, Nasirabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Kattali, Reazuddin bazar, Chaktai, Khatunganj, Agrabad and Boxirhat.
Met Office has recorded 122.4 mm rainfall from 3:00pm on Friday to 3:00pm on Saturday.
Meanwhile, landside killed two more people at Kaptai following heavy shower on Saturday. The deceased were identified as Atul Barua, 50 and Acha Mong Marma, 42. Atul Barua, hailed from Raozan Upazila while Acha Mong was a resident of Karigar Para.
The incident took place at 11:00 am at Karigar Para area when the two victims were waiting to get in an auto-rickshaw in front of a tea stall in the lower slope of a hill on Kaptai-Rangamati road.
All on a sudden, a portion of the hill collapsed on the auto-rickshaw, killing them on the spot.
In a similar landslide, two people, including a child, died at Mali Colony of Kalabagan area on July 8 last.
The meteorological Department predicted that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected for parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Chattogram divisions for the next 24 hours. In its heavy Rainfall Warning, the Met Office said the forecast will be valid from 10:00am Saturday to 10:00am Sunday.
The Met Office said heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely to occur at places over some parts of the country as the monsoon is active over Bangladesh.
Heavy rainfall often triggers landslides in the hilly regions of Chattogram division. In the morning, a landslide killed two commuters in Rangamati's Kaptai upazila.
But the district administration evacuated 37 families from the spot to a nearby shelter.
Assistant Commissioner Sharmin Akhtar conducted the drive.
Meanwhile, the Met Office recorded 96 millimetres or mm rainfall in Chattogram during the last 24 hours ending at 3 pm on Thursday.
The weather forecast for Chattogram predicted that Rain and chance of heavy thunderstorm and severe weather conditions are expected on Thursday and Friday.
"Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at many places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country", said a met office bulletin.
"Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay", it added.
The met office also predicted that the rainfall activity may decrease at the end period in the next 72 hours.
The highest rainfall was recorded 259 mm in Kutubdia under Chattogram division.
