People suffer for gabbed footpath at Gafargaon
GAFARGAON, MYMENSINGH, July 13: People are suffering much for grabbed footpaths in Gafargaon Municipality of the district.
Locals alleged though the municipality authority conducted several operations to free the sidewalk, but those were reoccupied.
While visiting from Patmahal point to Shahjid Abdul Bepary Gate, from Patmahal to Goruhata point, and from Jamtola point to Gafargaon Rail Station of the municipality area, the roads were found occupied by most of the business enterprises.
Besides, from the railway station to Abdul Bepary Gate, many fruit shops were set up on both sides of the road. As a result, the municipality drain is not visible, and the area gets water-logged after a scanty rainfall.
Housewife Farida Akhter and Momtaz Banu of the municipal area alleged that different vehicles are parked on the sidewalks, so there is no way to walk through the footpaths.
Occasionally, the shopkeepers load and unload grocery goods from big trucks in front of their shops, which cause traffic jam, she also said.
Teacher Abul Mansur said, "As the footpaths were occupied, we cannot move freely. The municipal authority tried to free the footpaths, but those were reoccupied."
Fruit seller Mukta said, when the municipal authorities asked them to move elsewhere, they followed the order. But, they sat again. They have to do it for the sake of livelihood.
Gafargaon Municipality Mayor S M Iqbal Hossain Sumon said, "We conducted drives to free the sidewalks. The mobile courts also evicted illegal shops. We will start the drives again."
