Flood-like situation at Ulipur: Dwellers making boats

ULIPUR, KURIGRAM, July 5: People of Ulipur Upazila in the district have prepared selves in a bid to check flood.
In this connection, a boat making spree has been noticed in the upazila.
Due to continuous rain and onrush of water from upstream, the water flow in all the local rivers has increased, causing flood like situation.
Most of the people living in the Brahmaputra and Teesta char areas have been water-logged. About 50 houses were eroded at eight points of the two rivers within a week.
While visiting Nayadar Village under Hatia Union of the upazila, the riverside people were found busy making boat.
While asked, Azgar Ali of the village said, "During flood we have to face hazard for protection of our families and cattle head. Considering the plight, we are making boats so that we can shift our families and belongings to safe places."
Another villager Dhaneswar said, "During flash flood, it is difficult to avail boat. So, we are making it to protect ourselves from the plight."
Carpenter Bahadur Mia, who was making boat, said, "I have made 10 boats in last one year. Making each boat required Tk 40,000."
It was known that people of Saheber Alga, Begumganj and Hatia unions are making over 100 boats in a bid to face flood.
People of these unions said if the government would take steps to make the boats, they would not worry about expenditure.
Upazila Project Development Officer Rabiul Islam said there are four flood shelters in the upazila where about 30,000 flood-hit people can be accommodated.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Abdul Kader said, "The people are making the boats out of their consciousness. We will consider whether government can make boats for the flood-hit people in next relief and disaster management committee meeting."
