112th birth anniversary of Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo was the ultimate anti-heroine, who took pain - polio, spina bifida, over 35 surgeries, and multiple miscarriages, just to name a few of the dire circumstances she was faced with in her lifetime - and used it to create art that empowered not only herself, but millions around the world. Generations later, women continue to be inspired by her work, as well as by her fearless spirit.
Kahlo was progressive before progressive was even a thing. She challenged conventional beauty standards - from her wild, bushy eyebrows to her mustache and eccentric, often androgynous style. She was openly bisexual (and had more game picking up women than most men did), could drink anyone under the table, and "dared" to do things like wear pants in a family photo and speak openly about subjects like menstruation and infertility - all of which was considered "unacceptable" for a lady back in her day. But by defying stereotypes and daring to do what was considered "weird" or unconventional, Kahlo unknowingly helped shape today's "normal."
To celebrate what would have been the Mexican artist's birthday (today), here are a few of our favorite Frida Kahlo quotes. Happy birthday, legend!
"I am my own muse. I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to better."
"I used to think that I was the strangest person in the world, but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me, too. I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it's true I'm here, and I'm just as strange as you."
"At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can."
"Nothing is worth more than laughter. It is strength to laugh and to abandon oneself, to be light. Tragedy is the most ridiculous thing."
"You deserve a lover who wants you disheveled, with everything and all the reasons that wake you up in a haste and the demons that won't let you sleep. You deserve a lover who makes you feel safe, who can consume this world whole if he walks hand in hand with you; someone who believes that his embraces are a perfect match with your skin. You deserve a lover who wants to dance with you, who goes to paradise every time he looks into your eyes and never gets tired of studying your expressions. You deserve a lover who listens when you sing, who supports you when you feel shame, and respects your freedom; who flies with you and isn't afraid to fall. You deserve a lover who takes away the lies and brings you hope, coffee, and poetry."
"Pain, pleasure, and death are no more than a process for existence. The revolutionary struggle in this process is a doorway open to intelligence."
"I am that clumsy human, always loving, loving, loving. And loving. And never leaving."
"They thought I was a surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality."
