Rupayan Group chief gets bail
Liakat Ali Khan alias Mukul, chairman of Rupayan Group, was granted bail by a Dhaka court on Sunday in a case filed over a deadly fire that ripped through 22-storey FR Tower in the capital's Banani on March 28.
Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the bail order after Mukul surrendered before it, said Banani police general register officer (GRO) Rakibul Hasan.
The defence lawyer Advocate SK Abu Sayeed submitted before the court that Mukul is an an old man and he is in poor health condition. If he gets bail, he will not flee and also not misuse the bail privileges. On the other hand, the state side opposed the bail.
The other accused in the case-- FR Tower's illegal floor owner Tasvir Ul Islam and land owner SMHI Faruque-- secured bail on April 11 and May 6 respectively.
The devastating fire at the tower killed 26 people and left some 70 injured on March 28.
On March 31, Milton Dutt, a sub-inspector and also the in-charge of Banani Police outpost, filed the case against land owner SMHI Faruque, Mukul, chairman of Rupayan Group, the builder company, and Tasvirul Islam, and others who were part of the building management committee and some unknown persons.
