Clash At Payra Power Plant

Chinese worker dies

PATUAKHALI, Jun 19: A Chinese worker, who was injured in a clash over the death of a local worker at Payra power plant in Kalapra upazila on Tuesday, died at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Jung Yung Sung, an employee of the 1,320 MW Thermal Power Plant.
Among the injured, Jung Yang sung was initially rushed to Kolapara Upazila Health Complex and later to Patuakhali General Hospital.
Later, he was taken to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where he died, said Leau Si, project manager of the construction firm building the power plant.
Jung Yang sung died of excessive     bleeding due to injury he sustained in his head, said Bakir Hossain, director of the Barishal Medical College Hospital.  
Also, the four other injured Chinese nationals were being shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital when last reported, Leu Si said.  
Plant workers said Sabindra Das, 32, son of Nagendra Das of Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district, was killed as he fell into the boiler machine of the plant on Tuesday afternoon.
As the news spread around, local workers of the plant burst into anger and vandalised offices, canteen and training centre inside the power plant.
They also confined the employees and staff of Bangladesh-China Power Company Ltd (BCPCL) and 3,000 Chinese workers to the power plant for eight hours from 3:00pm on Tuesday, said Shahmoni Ziko, an administrative officer of the BCPCL.
Six Chinese workers who suffered injuries during the unrest were sent to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where Chinese worker Jung Young succumbed to his injuries around 10:00am on Wednesday, said Dr Bakir Hossain. Of them four were sent to the DMCH.
Md Manirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Kalapara Police Station, said police on information went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
After hearing the death news of Sabindra, the other Bangladeshi workers vented their anger at the Chinese workers, said the police officer.
"When the Chinese workers retaliated a clash broke out.  Six Chinese nationals sustained injuries in the clash," he said. Matiul Islam Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner of Patuakhali, said necessary steps were taken in this regard.
State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid reached Payra Power Plant site by a helicopter on Wednesday morning.
A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the incident.  Members of Rapid Action Battalion have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
