AFC Cup group stage
Nabib Newaz Jibon assists Abahani to stun Manang Marshyangdi 5-0
Following a tremendous performance of skipper Nabib Newaz Jibon, Bangladesh Premier league champion Dhaka Abahani dumped Nepal club Manang Marshyangdi by 5-0 margin in a vital match of Group-E in the AFC Cup group stage at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Winning the match, the traditional sky blue outfits topped the group with 10 points.
Before the match, both the two top placers of the group Dhaka Abahani and Chennaiyin Football Club had seven points in their collection. But, the Indian club were in good position due to better goal difference. So, the Bangladeshi club would want a big margin win on the day.
Nepali professional league playing club Manang Marshyangdi was languishing on the bottom of the point table with only two points while other club of the group Indian professional league team Minerva Punjab Football Club had four points only.
When that was the condition, Dhaka Abahani's Portuguese coach Mario Licinio Guerreiro Lemos knew that the match was vital for the sky blue jerseys. That's why he said on the day before the match that his boys were only dreaming of a win in the match against the Nepalese club.
Team skipper and striker Nabib Newaj Jibon who scored the opening goal for the team in the 11th minute of the match was saying before the match, "It is the third time we are playing the AFC Cup group stage. It is a big opportunity for us to play the final stage of the event and we do not want to squander the chance."
Nabib and his fellows put tremendous effort in winning the match. Scoring the first goal, the striker assisted Haiti striker Kervens Fils Belfort to score the second goal of the team in the injury time of the first half.
Another local striker Jewel Rana scored the third goal in the 63rd minute following an assist of midfielder Sohel Rana.
Abahani coach was expecting goal from Nigeria striker Sunday Chizoba Nwadialu and the foreigner didn't dishearten the coach scoring the team's fourth goal in the 75th minute. Nabib was the one who assisted Sunday to score that.
Former skipper of the national team Mamunul Islam nailed the coffin of Manang Marshyangdi scoring the fifth and final goal of the team in the injury time of the second half. He received the ball from Sunday.
The Sky blues are now waiting for the last match of the group stage on next Wednesday, 26th June, where they will face India club Minerva Punjab with whom they played a 2-2 tie at home earlier.
