A Jubo League leader was hacked to death in post-election violence in Sadar Upazila of Madaripur on Wednesday noon.
Son of Belayet Munshi, deceased Ershad Munshi, 27, was the general secretary of Madaripur Municipality’s Ward- 3 Jubo League.
Police and local source said a group of miscreants, led by Jubo League activist Jasim Goura, also the supporter of rebel AL candidate Obaidur Rahman Khan, swooped on Ershad and stabbed him with sharp weapons in Sabujbagh area around 1.00pm, leaving him critically injured.
Hearing his cry for help, local people rescued Ershad and sent him to Madaripur Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Subrata Kumar, Superintendent of Madaripur Police said Jasim Goura committed the murder. "We failed to arrest him before the election," said the official, adding that he is under police scanner.
Family members of the deceased accused Jasim Goura and his men of committing the murder.
On Tuesday, rebel candidate Obaidur Rahman Khan, the younger brother of former shipping minister and local AL MP Shahjahan Khan, was elected Sadar Upazila council chairman defeating district Awami League General Secretary Kajal Krishna Dey in the upazila election held on Tuesday.
Ershad had campaigned for ‘boat’ candidate Kajal during the election, according to his family.
Meanwhile, agitating people vandalised and torched 10 houses in Kolatola area including Jasim Goura’s house around 3.00pm protesting the murder.
Police and RAB personnel have been deployed in the area after the murder.
