Activities in Payra Power Plant suspended
Works in Payra 1320 MW Thermal Power Plant in Kalapara of Patuakhali were suspended on Wednesday following the deaths of two workers- one Chinese and another local.
Police have been deployed outside the plant to ease the situation.
Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner Matiul Islam Chowdhury said the State Minister for Power is scheduled to visit the plant to monitor the situation.
Plant's executive engineer Rezwan Iqbal Khan said a Bangladeshi worker Shabis Chandra Das died after falling from a boiler on Tuesday afternoon.
The death led to a clash between Bangladeshi and Chinese workers that left 10 Bangladeshi and six Chinese workers injured.
The injured were sent to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where Chinese Jung Yang Sung died.
The remaining injured Chinese workers were sent to Dhaka for better treatment.
Meanwhile, a large number of police and RAB personnel were inside the plant on Tuesday night following the clash.
Officer in-charge of Kalapara Police Station Monirul Islam informed that the situation remained calm.
The OC told over mobile phone that a large number of police and RAB personnel were deployed in the plant and activities remained suspended since morning.
Deputy Commissioner Matiul Islam Chowdhury and Superintendent of Patuakhali Police Moinul Hasan visited the spot on Tuesday night.
The DC said he has been staying in the power plant since Tuesday night and the present situation is normal there.
