Creative questions assess students’ merit?

Creative questions assess students’ merit?

Can the merit of the students be assessed through creative questions? This yes/no question is a burning question among the educationists, teachers, academicians, education workers, education thinkers and intelligentsia.
To bring the students of Bangladesh out of the clutches of memorization, suggestions, guide books and coaching centres, creative question system was introduced. To make the students able to apply the knowledge and understanding in new situations and to examine the students' ability of analyzing data and facts, creative question system was introduced.
Teaching-Learning Outcome
The structure of a creative question tells us that creative question system has relieved the students of the burden of memorization. It gives the students the opportunity to give vent to their pent up imagination, innovative ideas and creativity.
As creative questions deal with the four stages of students' thinking ability-knowledge, understanding, application, higher skill, there is no denying that students' merit can be assessed accurately. The answers of creative questions are supposed to be 'to the point', 'zero fat'.
As any work of research is new, unique, in the same way, every creative question is supposed to be unique. It deals with the creativity of the students because it makes the students go from deep to the deepest level of mind to answer from easy to the most difficult stage of questions.
There are some persons who are dead against the creative MCQ system. According to a Daily Star report, all the participants in a meeting at CIRPAP to find ways to improve the quality of secondary and higher secondary education recommended the abolishment of the multiple choice question system. But if this is the case, why have tests like IELTS, SAT, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, etc. use MCQS. Even in public examinations in the neighboring countries like Srilanka, the Philippines, Singapore, MCQS are widely used. MCQS are needed for content coverage or content validity (representative questions from different lessons, thereby covering the whole contents of the text).

To eliminate the limitation of the creative MCQ system, the creative MCQS should be more intelligent, should not be easily detectable. All the creative MCQS should be Multiple Completion and Situation Set based. That is, creative MCQS should be creative in the true sense of the word.
An examination is the means to judge the knowledge and learning received by students not only from their prescribed books but also from reference books, newspapers, their teachers, even from practical day to day life. Creative question system has made students read reference books, non-prescribed books and listen to their teachers' class lectures.
The stems or scenarios of creative questions are not directly taken from their text books. It has lessened the number of unsuccessful students. It has made the students renounce unfair means and read the text books thoroughly. It has lessened the discrimination between and among subjects, between the results of education boards and among education boards, between the yearly and among the yearly results of education boards, between the marking of examiners and among the marking of examiners. All these things go a long way to assess the merit of students accurately, objectively.
It can fairly be said that the merit of the students can be assessed through creative questions. The problems of implementation of this system do not make Benjamin Bloom's creative question system uncreative, ineffective.  To get the optimum output, teachers should be trained property to make the questions.
Our education minister Dr Dipu Moni has rightly told that the system of creative questions will go on in our country as it is in vague in many other countries of the world. She opines that we can think of how to develop the system.
We all know about the 'questionable question' of a reputed school in Dhaka city. It raised a stormy discussion in newspapers because the options of the MCQS lacked symmetry- a precondition of successful creative MCQS, Taking stems from guide books should be strictly prohibited. Stems or scenarios should solely come from the teachers' imagination. The teachers should be properly trained to mark objectively. Students should be more motivated to read the text between the lines. Only then the creative question system will be able to assess students' merit cent percent.
