Jail inmates to get improved breakfast now
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has inaugurated new breakfast menu for inmates of the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. For more than 250 years prisoners in the country were taking only two slices of bread and a small measure of gur (molasses) in breakfast.
Prison sources said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed to bring a change in the menu when it was discussed in the recent conference of the deputy commissioners in the capital.
At the inauguration on Sunday the Home Minister said, "Keeping the health and nutrition of the inmates in mind, the government has changed the menu."
Instead of the menu fixed by the
colonial British government, the prisoners will now get khichuri, halwa and bread,
and bread and vegetables.
Since colonial times, inmates were allotted 116.64 grams of wheat bread and 14.58 grams of molasses, the prisoners under trial were allotted 87.48 grams of wheat bread and 14.58 grams of molasses which is inadequate.
From now on, vegetable and bread will be given four days a week, halwa and bread on one day and vegetable khichuri on two days. "Inmates are being trained on 38 skills in the prison to ensure that they are able to earn a livelihood after being released from prison," said the Home Minister.
Prison sources said the Prime Minister desired to change the menu when it was discussed in the recent conference of the deputy commissioners. The inmates in 68 prisons across the country used to get two breads of 102.60 grams and 14.28 grams of gur until now.
