‘Drug peddler’ killed in Teknaf gunfight

Cox's BAZAR, June 15: An alleged drug peddler was killed in a 'gunfight' with police in Teknaf  upazila of the district early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Md Russel Mahmud, 36, son of Foyez Ahmed of Uttar Lakkhanghona. Police said he was wanted in a drug-related case.

Officer-in-Charge Pradeep Kumar Das of Teknaf Model Police Station said Russel went to buy Yaba at the house of Amir Hamza, an accused in a drug case, in Hoaikang Doingakata area at 1:30am on the day.
On information, police went to the area. Sensing the presence of police, Yaba traders opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate.
Russel was shot during the gunfight. Police took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex. He was later shifted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Law enforcers recovered 5,000 Yaba tablets and five short gun cartridges from the spot.
