Illegal polythene business still on in Gazipur
SREEPUR, GAZIPUR, June 14: Allegations have been raised that a syndicate is allegedly running illegal polythene business in the district.
According to sources, the local administration is also involved in this.
Sources said although written complaints have been sent to the authorities concerned, they did not take any initiative. The polythene business is running in public.
After visiting Kachabazar wholesale market at Maona Chowrasta area in Sreepur Upazila of the district, this correspondent found that a local trader Jashim Uddin is selling polythene publicly.
On information about the visit at Jashim Uddin's shop, polythene traders Anisur Rahman, Md Humayun and Angur fled away by shutting down their shops.
Jashim Uddin said they buy polythene from traders Rafiqul Islam, Md Liton, Md Sujon and Sohrab Mia at wholesale price in Bypass area of the city.
He sells polythene at Bormi, Sreepur, Kawraid and nearby areas at wholesale and retail prices.
He further said the polythene is supplied to Bhogra Kachabazar area from Lalbag area of Dhaka and and Tongi Bazaar area in Gazipur.
He also said, "Before stopping us from selling the polythene, the polythene producing factories should be shut down."
This correspondent found the shop of Md Humayun closed. When contacted over phone, he said that he has been running the business for last four to five years.
An informer, Nazrul Islam, said when he sent a written letter to the Deputy Minister for Environment and Forest Ministry Abdullah Al Islam Jacob about shutting the business, he gave directives to the director of Environment Directorate.
Besides, in April of 2019, he sent written complaint to Director General of RAB, Inspector General of Police and Directorate of Environment.
Even after these, the polythene business is running all over the district.
Sreepur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sheikh Shamsul Arefin said he has joined in his service a few days back. He is not aware of polythene business. If he gets information of polythene trade, he will take necessary action against the concerned.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station (PS) Jabedul Islam said the allegation that they are involved in the business is not true. They'll take necessary steps by bringing the issue to the local upazila administration.
OC (Investigation) of Detective Branch (DB) of Police of the district Md Afzal Hossain said the allegation that the police are involved in the business is not true.
Deputy Director of District Environment Directorate Abdus Salam said that they'll run mobile court through local upazila administration against the illegal polythene trade.
