221 killed, 664 injured in Eid journey: Report

A total of 221 people were killed in 185 road accidents in 12 days of Eid journey, according to a survey report of a passenger welfare organization.

Jatri Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad published at a press briefing held at the National Press Club on Wednesday.

Parishad president Brig Gen (retd) Quamrul Islam while reading out the report informed that the accidents also left a total of 652 people injured and 375 paralyzed.

Quamrul further said, “A total of 5.5 crore holidaymakers went home to celebrate the Eid festival. At least 221 people were killed in road accidents during May 30-June 10 period. Beside, four people were killed and 12 injured in waterway accidents while 22 killed in railway accidents.”

He added 63 buses, 38 trucks and covered vans, 19 private cars and microbuses, 30 three-wheelers (locally known as Nasimon-Karimon), 64 motorcycles and 26 other types of vehicles were damaged during the road accidents.”

During the briefing, he placed a set of 10 recommendations  to reduce the accidents and urged the authorities concerned to take proper plan making the journey smooth.

“We should avoid the tendency to spend Eid vacation at home. In another option, if necessary, vehicles can be rented from neighbouring countries to solve the problem,” said Quamrul.

National Press Club former general secretary Quamrul Islam, Jatri Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad finance secretary Saimun Nahar and publicity and publication secretary Abul Bashar Hawlader spoke, among others, in the programme.
