BCL leader held in extortion case in M’singh
MYMENSINGH, June 1: Police arrested former president of Bangladesh Chhatra League's city unit Abdullah Al Mamun Arif in an extortion case on Thursday. Arif is also the prime suspect in recent Juba League leader Reazul Karim Russell murder in Mymensingh.
Two police teams of Kotwali Police Station and Detective Branch (DB) of Police jointly raided Kachari Ferry Ghat area in the city on Thursday evening and detained him, said Officer-in-Charge of district DB Shah Kamal Akanda.
In police interrogation, Arif confessed of possessing arms, and following his statement, police recovered a foreign pistol with four rounds of bullet from a bush at Kachari Ferry Ghat area at 3am on Friday.
Earlier, Abu Hanif, a deed writer and secretary of Mymensingh Dalil Lekhak Samity' at Mymensingh Sub-Registry Office, lodged a case accusing some 12 persons including Arif for alleged extortion in the office on May 27.
Arif and his gang members had been involved in extortion from sub-registry office for long.
He was produced before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Dewan Moniruzzaman with a seven-day remand prayer on Friday afternoon. The court granted a three-day remand and sent him to jail, said Court Inspector of Mymensingh Sheikh Kabirul Islam.
A group of assailants stabbed Reazul Karim Russell, 34, to death near Mrittunjoy School in the city on May 14. A member of the district unit of Juba League, Russell was also a former vice president of district BCL.
Victim's father Jalal Uddin of Char Haripur Village in Mymensingh Sadar Upazila filed a murder case against some 14 persons with Kotwali Police Station later that day. Arif was named as the prime accused in the case.
Since the killing, family members and local people have been continuing their protests bringing out of procession and submitted memorandums to divisional commissioner, deputy inspector general (Mymensingh Range) of police, deputy commissioner of Mymensingh and superintendent of police. They also held a press conference at Mymensingh Press Club on May 26, demanding immediate arrest of Arif and other accused soon.
Police so far arrested three youths for their alleged involvement in the killing. They are- Mobarak Hossen, 25, Azizul Islam, 33, and Netai, 30, of the city. They have confessed to their involvement in Russell's murder.
