‘Drug trader’ killed in ‘gunfight’

CUMILLA, May 24: A suspected drug trader was killed in a 'gunfight' with police near Gumti River protection dam in Sadar upazila of the district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Jakir Hossain alias Kala Jakir, 35, son of Sultan Ahmed of Sashongaccha area in the upazila. He was wanted in 17 cases, police said.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abu Salam Mia of Kotwali Model Police Station said police, acting on a tip-off, conducted a drive in the area to arrest Kala Jakir around 2:00am,
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Jakir and his cohorts opened fire on police, forcing them to retaliate.
At one stage, Jakir sustained bullet injuries. He was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. One LG, two bullets and 1,200 Yaba pills were recovered from the spot, police said.
