Fazle Hossain Badshah, General Secretary of Bangladesh Workers Party, demanded the price of paddy to be fixed at least Tk 1,100 per maund.
He came up with the demand while addressing a rally staged in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Rajshahi on Sunday.
Badshah said, "It costs a farmer Tk 9500 per bigha for paddy cultivation. Therefore, price of paddy should not be kept below 1100."
Bangladesh Workers Party leaders and activists of the district and the metropolitan organised the rally demanding paddy price hike with the slogan 'Save Agriculture, Save Farmers'.
The rally also surrounded the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
"Once upon a time, people would die of famine in the country. Agricultural sectors developed thanks to technology," he said making a reference to the speech of Agriculture Minister (Dr Md Abdur Razzak) that "We have made the country self-sufficient in food."
Farmers work hard to cultivate crops, but they don't get due credit.
President of metropolitan Workers Party Liakot Ali liku presided over the rally.
