At least three people were killed and 23 others were injured when a makeshift canopy collapsed near Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after a nor'wester struck the city. The incident occurred when the canopy set for an iftar party fell on the devotees during the storm around 7:15pm on Friday (May 17), police said.
The injured devotees were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The nor'wester crashed the temporary canopy which collapsed on the people under it and on pedestrians around 7:00pm during the storm. Bachchu Mia, inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the deceased was identified as Shafikul Islam, 40. About 23 victims were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
