Cap makers at Sherpur busy ahead of Eid

SHERPUR, BOGURA, May 17: Muslim men celebrate Eid clothed in colourful panjabi with prayer cap.
Besides, during the month of Ramadan, Muslim men go to mosque to perform prayers. Thus, the demand of prayer cap goes high during Ramadan.
Makers of Sherpur Upazila are busy making prayer cap for the month of Ramadan and Eid. Besides, the male cap makers, their housewives are also making the cap.
After meeting the local demand, prayer caps produced in local factories are also being exported to different Muslim countries.
The cap is being made in 400 villages under Sherpur and Dhunat upazilas of the district. After finishing their household chores, the housewives get engaged in making cap.
They make colourful caps through their skilful work with needle and yarn. The caps are being exported to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Dubai, Qatar, India and other Muslim countries. They are earning foreign currency from their work. Thus, they are contributing to the country's economy.
It is learned that caps are stitched at Chakdhali, Joyla-Juan, Joyla-Aladi, Kallyani, Chak-Kallyani, and Guagachhi areas of Sherpur Upazila and Bohalgacha, Choukibari, Faringhata, Kuhra-Hata, Bishwaharigachha, Chandar, Bhunobogoti, Chalapara, Pachthupi, Theukandi and Batikabari areas of Dhunat Upazila.
Seller Jewel Akhon said about two lakh women are engaged in this profession. Ahead of Eid, thousands of men and women get engaged in this profession.
The correspondent found that the weaving of cap began about 20 years back in the villages.
Rozina Bibi, Happy, Tubli, and Shirin Akhter of Bohalgacha Village said that they were involved in cap making since childhood. They feel that instead of passing leisure time at home, they should do something productive. With this thought, to carry on the tradition, they got engaged with cap making.
Bithi, Sabina Yasmin, Suborna and Sheuly said they produce cap besides their study.
Especially during Ramadan, the villagers work round the clock in making cap.
They give yarn to the sellers. Later, after cutting the price of the yarn, they make cap with the rest of the earning.
Seller Md Jewel Akhon said they can make three to four caps a day. They can make 12 caps from bobbin yarn which they can sell at Tk 400.
