TANGAIL, May 17: Students of different colleges voluntarily cut the ripen paddy of farmer Abdul Malek Sikder at Bankina area in Paikra Union of Kalihati Upazila of the district on Wednesday.
Earlier on Sunday, Abdul Malek attempted to blaze his paddy field as a symbol of being frustrated with labourer crisis, high wages and low price of paddy. But other farmers doused the fire before much devastation. This news spread across the country. Therefore, students of Sadot College, Maulana Mohammad Ali College, Lion Nazrul Islam Degree College and students of other colleges of the district took the initiative to help the farmer.
A student, Md. Rafi of Lion Nazrul Islam Degree College, said through social media he came to know about the matter and decided to stand beside the farmer by cutting the paddy.
Another student, Md. Al-Amin of Maulana Mohammad Ali College said, "The cost of labourer is much higher than the paddy price. By considering this, we cut the paddy of his field."
Md. Sujon of the same college said "Many farmers are facing problems cutting paddy. Therefore, we came from different colleges to help Malek Mia."
Farmer Malek said, as a protest, due to lack of labourer and low price of paddy, he set fire to his paddy field. "But I am very happy as students came forward to help me," he added.
