Scrap material traders running business on Noakhali road

NOAKHALI, May 17: Scrap material traders are doing business occupying the link road of Sonapur Bus Stand in Sadar Upazila of the district.
As a result, people are suffering much in using the road.
It is learnt that Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, lawmaker of Noakhali-4 Constituency, took step to reconstruct and widen the road with the help of Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in 2013.
Locals expected that the construction of the road would ease traffic congestion at Zero Point of Sonapur Bus Stand Road.
The road was constructed so that the vehicle could enter the bus stand through Zero Point.
The road was reconstructed and widened, but the local people are not getting the benefits of the road for which the road was constructed.
The correspondent found that the illegal parking of rickshaw, battery and CNG run auto-rickshaws is causing traffic congestion.
On the other hand, stack of scrap materials are kept blocking the road.
Besides, the scrap material traders shape the materials using hammer which is damaging the roads.
While loading and unloading the materials in truck, the traffic congestion intensifies. So, mass people, high officials and vehicles carrying army men face setback in their movement.
Some scrap material shops are built in Link Road of Sonapur. The shops open at 12pm and close at 12am.
The traders of the scrap materials are involved with many criminal activities. Sometimes, thieves steal objects from people's houses and send those to the scrap material shops.
They also steal rod items from different areas. They steal nut, screws of the rail-line. Sometimes, they steal slippers of rail-line.
Local people alleged that the scrap material traders are directly or indirectly involved with the theft.
President of Noakhali Journalists' Union Akash Md Jashim said the traders are doing business on the important road in public, but the authority is silent about their activities.
He further said small vehicles meet with accidents when they try to take turn on the right side due to the standing trucks loaded with scrap materials.
He also said the objects from dirt are also causing environmental hazards.
The syringes carrying lethal germs from clinic and hospital, empty cans of saline and plastic materials spread germs in the air.
Local people are also falling ill due to the spread of germs from the scrap material shops.
The victims are expecting the intervention of Municipality Mayor Shahid Ullah Khan Sohel and authority concerned of RHD in solving the issues.
