Date price soars in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, May 15: The price of dates went up in the district.
The date sellers are demanding price as per their wish. As a result, people from lower class to middle class are facing problem in buying dates.  
While visiting  the bazaars in upazilas of the district,  this correspondent found that all kinds of dates are selling at high price. Azwa dates from Saudi Arabia are being sold at an increased price.
Azwa dates are selling at Tk 1,700 per kg, Mekzel dates at Tk 1,300, Kamranga Mariam of Iran at Tk 1,000, normal Mariam at Tk 900, Dabas at Tk 240, Farida at Tk 300, Boroi at Tk 220, Nagal at Tk 200, packet dates from Tunisia at Tk 460, Bangla dates at Tk 100 to Tk 120
per kg.
Date seller of Boro Bazar Delwar Hossain said that the demand is high in the fruit shops in the city. They mainly bought the dates at high price from Badamtali sellers of Dhaka. Transportation cost is also added to the price.
He also said that the price was fixed by the wholesalers, and for that reason, the date sellers of the district are also selling at that price.  
Trader Mokammel Hossain said that they sell the dates at the same price as they buy in wholesale price from Dhaka.
He said that although the price is a bit high, the quality of dates in the district is quite good. He claimed that they don't sell any dates of low quality.
The local customers alleged that since the demand of dates increased during Ramadan, traders raise the price from Tk 20 to Tk 300 on an average.
Rickshaw puller Julhash Uddin said that the price of dates is higher this year than the last year's. He said that the price of each type of dates increased by Tk 20 to Tk 300.  
Bank official Faridul Haque said that the price of good quality dates has increased by Tk 50 to Tk 300
per kg.
He further said that price of all goods increased besides dates.
