Mango harvest in Rajshahi begins
RAJSHAHI, May 15: The first phase of mango harvesting in the district begins on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) SM Abdul Quader announced the date for plucking Guti varieties of mango after a discussion with the officials of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), fruit researchers, mango farmers and mango traders at the DC office conference room recently.
The DC said as per the time fixed by the administration, Guti mango can be picked after May 15, and Gopalbhog variety cannot be picked before May 20; Lakshanbhog and Lakhna varieties can be plucked after May 25, while Himasagar and Khirsapati can be plucked by May 28.
Besides, Langra and Bombay varieties will be ready after June 6, while Fazli, Surma Fazli and Amarupali can be plucked on June 16 and Ashwina Mango after July 1, he added.
The mangoes of the district are formalin free. These are not even artificially produced.
Yet people fear that chemicals might be used in the fruits. To eliminate the fear, a time for mango picking has been fixed.
Among others, SP Md Shahidullah, Chief Scientific Officer of Rajshahi Fruit Research Centre Abdul Alim, Deputy Director of the DAE Shamsul Haque and nine upazila chairmen and executive officials were also present at the meeting.
