Dhaka Abahani beat Chennaiyin FC 3-2
Dhaka Abahani, the traditional sky blue outfits, defeated Chennaiyin Football Club, a former champion of Indian Super League, by 3-2 margin in a vital match of AFC Cup group stage on Wednesday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
Abahani's Portuguese coach Mario Lemos and the booters knew very well that the Wednesday-match was the 'do or die' match for them and that's why they put their best effort to win it on the day.
In the match, Chennaiyin scored the opener in the sixth minute of the match when a right footed shot of CK Vineeth from the centre of the box fired the post. Vineeth received the ball from Isaac Vanmalsawma.
Dhaka Abahani failed to equalise the margin in the first half. But, they succeeded to level in the second half with a 64-minute goal of Haitian striker Kervens Fils Belfort. Being assisted by Masih Saighani following a set piece situation, Belfort took a right footed shot from the left side of the box and hit the post.
The sky blues went ahead in the 69th minute after its Afghan defender Masih Saighani utilised a freekick to hit the top left corner.
The Indian club held Dhaka Abahani in the 74th minute. Isaac Vanmalsawma scored the goal with a right footed shot from the centre of the box.
The sky blue outfits scored the match decider soon in the 88th minute when midfielder Mamunul Islam curved a powerful right footer from the right side of the box and fired the post.
Winning the match, both Dhaka Abahani and Chennaiyin Football Club had seven points in their collection. The India club is leading the point table due to goal difference. Dhaka Abahani is behind one goal of the rivals.
