One killed, 30 hurt in AL factional clash

A man was killed and 30 others were injured in a factional clash of Awami League over toll collection in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district on Tuesday night.
Deceased Shahab Uddin, 50, was an activist of Chhatak upazila unit Sramik League. He was a resident of Bagbari area of Chhatak municipal area, according to locals.
Superintendent of Sunamganj Police Md Barkatullah Khan said the supporters of the district Awami League joint general secretary Abul Kalam Chowdhury and district AL information research secretary Shameem Chowdhury, also Kalam's younger brother, locked into the clash. They also exchanged bullets during the clash, leaving 31 injured.
The injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared bullet-hit Shahab dead.
Police and locals said the two brothers and ruling party leaders had long been at loggerhead over toll collection from stone and sand- laden boats in the Surma River. The clash ensued following the dispute.
