Producers demand necessary steps to save Bidi industry
RANGPUR, May 14: Bidi cultivators, producers and consumers of the district on Monday called for saving them by revoking all types of taxes imposed on bidi industry.
The tobacco growers put stress on imposing extra tax on multinational cigarette companies, which are running business in Bangladesh.
They came up with the remarks at a press conference organised by the District Tobacco Farmers and Businessmen Samiti at Rangpur Press Club.
The platform's president Mahbub Alam, general secretary Mizanur Rahman, organising secretary Nurul Islam Lavlu, farmer leader Lutfor Rahman, business leader Akram Hossain and Abul Kalam Azad, among others, spoke at the conference.
They also urged the government to craft policies to save country's tobacco cultivators.
They voiced their seven-point charter of demands that are: revoking all taxes imposed on Bidi industry; like bidi industry in India, the bidi industry of Bangladesh should be declared as 'cottage industry'; foreign cigarettes must be banned from the country; conspiracies to alleviate bidi industry must be stopped; steps to keep Bidi price lower should be taken; as long as there are cigarettes in the country, the bidi industry will remain; and addressing discriminations between cigarette and bidi industry.
