Boro farmers face loss by Fani
RAJSHAHI, May 8: Cyclone Fani has damaged Boro paddy cultivation in the district.
Farmers of this region are worried about getting expected yield this year. They are now apprehending huge loss.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), this year's Boro paddy farming target was 65,125 hectares of land, but it was cultivated on more 4,985 ha of land than the target.
Boro paddy was damaged on huge lands in eight upazilas of the district due to incessant rain from Friday noon.
Farmer Mamun Khan of Godagari Municipality said, "Cyclone Fani on Friday caused much damage to the Boro paddy. On next morning, I went to the field and found that half of the paddies were damaged. As a result, the yield may suffer much."
He also said, "I cultivated Boro on about eight-bigha land this year. I had to spend Tk 10,000 in per bigha. After selling the produce, I will hardly be able to repay the loan taken from different sources."
According to Rajshahi Meteorological Office, 64.4 mm of rainfall was recorded from Friday till 10am on Saturday. The air humidity was 100 per cent at 6am.
Deputy Director of DAE Shamsul Haque said there was no such loss of farmland due to Fani.
