Six awarded death for killing govt official

Six people have been awarded death penalty for killing Aminul Haq Khaedm alias Anis Khadem, an administrative officer at Dhaka Divisional Commissioner's office, following a conflict over the property of a shrine 10 years ago.
The condemned convicts are: Shahidur Rahman Khadem alias Minu Khaedm alias Mama Khadem, Mahbub Alam Liton alias Dat Bhanga Liton, Sheikh Shameem Ahmed, Md Jewel, Kamal Hossain Biplob, and Sohel alias Cats Eye Sohel. Among them, Liton and Biplob are fugitive.
Dhaka's no. 4 Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Abdur Rahman on Thursday handed down the verdict.
The court also sentenced another accused Abdullah Mohammad Nazim Uddin alias Honda Babu, who is also on the run, to life term imprisonment, with a fine of Tk 20,000.
The court, however, acquitted accused Ajgar Hossain Rana from the murder charge as he was found not guilty.
According to the prosecution, Aminul Khadem was shot dead at mazar colony near Dhaka's Malibagh Shahee Masjid on May 4, 2009.
The government servant was also the general secretary of Kharampur Shrine Committee in Akhaura of Brahmanbaria district. He was a resident at Sabujbag under Basabo thana in Dhaka.
Prosecution said Aminul was gunned down at the instruction of Shahidur Rahman Khadem following a conflict over the property of the shrine.
Later, Aminul's son Saidul Huq lodged a case with city's Motijheel Police Station in this connection.
