A woman, who was set afire allegedly by her husband at Ayubnagar in Kamolnagar upazila of Laxmipur district on Sunday afternoon, died at the Burn and plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Monday morning.
Bachchu Miah, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, said the deceased was identified Shahenur Akhter, 24, daughter of Zafar Alam of Sonagazi village in Raozan upazila of Chattogram.
Talking to reporters at Laxmiput Sadar hospital on Sunday, the victim claimed that she married Salauddin, son of Mohor Ali, one and a half years ago.
One year after her marriage, she came to know that Salauddin was married earlier and he has two sons. Hearing the news, Shahenur rushed to Salauddin's house at Ayubnagar and claimed recognition as his wife.
At one stage, Salauddin took her to a Soyabean field in the afternoon and set her on fire by pouring kerosene, she claimed.
Being rescued, Shahenur, who sustained 30 percent burn injuries, was admitted to the Sadar hospital, said sub-inspector Abu Musa of Laxmipur district police outpost. Later, the injured was referred to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College where she died around 11:00 am on Monday.
