Awami League Acting General Secretary Mahbubul-ul Alam Hanif on Saturday said the ruling party will not take punitive action against leaders on the mere complaints of working against the party nominated candidates in the upazila polls.
The complaints must be supported by specific evidence for taking punitive measures, he told a press briefing after a secretariat meeting at the party president's political office in Dhanmondi in the capital.
Hanif said there is no relation between the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and the oath-taking of BNP MPs-elect as the people did not elect them for the release of Khaleda.
Bargaining over the release of Khaleda Zia will be a bad instance in country's politics, he said, referring to a remark made by BNP leader Barrister Maudud Ahmed, in which he said, the elected BNP members of parliament (MPs) would take oath if Khaleda Zia was released.
The AL Acting General Secretary said if the medical board advices shifting of Khaleda Zia abroad and she applies for release from jail on parole, then the Home Ministry will look into the matter.
He reiterated that for Khaleda's release, there are two ways-first, for her to get bail from the court and second, petition the President seeking clemency after pleading guilty.
AL joint general secretaries Dr Dipu Moni, Adv Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, Organizing Secretaries - Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, Adv Mezbah Uddin Siraj, office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, science and technology secretary Engr Abdus Sabur, forest and environment secretary Delwar Hossain and agriculture secretary Faridunnahar Laily, among others, were present.
Hanif said the party will collect Bangabandhu memorabilia, including his photographs and letters in Bangabandhu's handwriting. Any one in possession of those and willing to hand those over should take help of AL district unit president and secretary.
On the arrest of Sonagazi AL chief Ruhul Amin over Nusrat murder, the AL Acting General Secretary said if any leader is found to be involved in any crime, he must face punishment.
