Banned current net being made in Munshiganj
MUNSHIGANJ, Apr 20: The district is well known for manufacturing banned current net or monofilament.
Keeping before the next rainy season, huge amount of current net is being made at about 200 factories in different villages of Panchasar area in Sadar Upazila.
Though district administration sat in meeting with current net manufacturers and marketers several times on stopping production of current net, there was not result.
Finding no alternative, district administration, police and district fisheries department jointly raided Gosaibag area in Mukterpur under Sadar Upazila on Thursday and seized 57.50 lakh metres of current net worth about Tk 8.65 crore from five illegal factories.
At that time, executive magistrate of mobile court and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Faruk Ahmed arrested a current net trader Tazbir Ahmed and fined him Tk 1.5 lakh.
Earlier, on April 10 last, another mobile court raided 65 to 70 current net selling shops at Mukterpur Ferry Ghat area and seized 4.72 crore metres of current net worth about Tk 94.40 crore.
At that time, executive magistrate of the court Syeda Yasmin Sultana fined 21 persons Tk 1.05 lakh. Later, the seized nets were burnt beside the Dhaleswari River.
Locals said six persons started producing current net at Mukterpur area after the independence of the country. The scope of the business started to expand since 1992. There are about 200 factories at Mukterpur, Gosaibag, Jorpukurpar, Nayagaon, Malirpathar, Firingi Bazaar, Mireswarai, Binodpur and Dayal Bazaar villages in Sadar Upazila.
Traders from Cox's Bazar, Chattogram, Barishal, Barguna, Pirojpur and Bhola districts buy current nets from here, and they communicate through waterway.
