Sonagazi AL chief  arrested over Nusrat murder

FENI, Apr 19: Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Sonagazi Upazila Awami League President Ruhul Amin on Friday in connection with the murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
With this, as many as 18 people, including eight FIR-named accused, have so far been arrested over the murder of the madras girl.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Banaj Majumder, chief of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), confirmed the news of Ruhul Amin's detention in the evening.
Ruhul Amin's name has surfaced from the confessions given by the accused arrested so far over the murder of Nusrat.
Ruhul was vice-president of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa governing body
The authorities on Wednesday dissolved the committee citing the killing of student Nusrat by suspected followers of principal SM Siraj-ud-Daula, who is accused of sexually harassing her.
Siraj was known to have links with Ruhul and Maksud Alam, a ward councillor of Sonagazi Municipality and acting general secretary of the ruling party's Sonagazi unit.  Maksud, one of the eight accused named in Nusrat murder case, has already been remanded in police custody.  Locals said Ruhul Amin was arrested from his office at Taklia Bazar area on Friday afternoon.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) SM Ruhul Amin on Thursday said local politics had played a role in the fatal arson attack on Nusrat.
He referred to the demonstrations organised by rival leaders of the ruling Awami League in favour of and against principal Siraj after his arrest on March 27 for sexual harassment.
DIG Ruhul is heading an investigating into alleged negligence of duty by police in Feni's Sonagazi before and after Nusrat was burnt on April 6, an attack police said was orchestrated by Siraj from jail.
Maksud backed programmes demanding release of Siraj while Sonagazi Upazila Awami League Organising Secretary Sheikh Abdul Halim Mamun, who is also a ward councillor, backed the programmes demanding punishment of the madrasa principal.
Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Sonagazi upazila of Feni, was set ablaze on April 6 allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against principal Sirajuddoula of the madrasa for sexually harassing her last month.
After fighting for life for five days, the madrasa girl died at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on the night of April 10.
Five accused--Nur Uddin, Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Abdul Quader and Umme Sultana Popy -gave confessional statements before a court.
Sharif told the court on Wednesday that they met the principal at jail on March 28 and 30. On April 4, they made the final plan at a meeting where 12 people were present, he said, adding that he was assigned to guard the gate while Nur Uddin and Abdul Quader were with him.
Shahadat, Jubayer and Jaber went to the roof wearing burkas along with Kamrun Nahar Moni and Umme Sultana Popy, he said.
Shamim reportedly talked to AL leader Ruhul Amin over mobile phone after they set Nusrat afire. At that time, he allegedly told Shamim that he was aware of the incident and asked them to go into hiding.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Sharaf Uddin Ahmed recorded the statement of Popy, daughter of madrasa principal's sister-in-law, under section 164, said special police super of PBI Chattogram division M Iqbal.
In her statement, Popy was learned to tell the court that she called Nusrat to the rooftop from the examination centre on April 6.
Besides, the same court placed murder accused Javed Hossain on a fresh three-day remand in the madrasa girl murder case.
On April 13, Senior Judicial Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted a seven-day remand for him when PBI Inspector Shah Alam, also the IO of the case, produced him before his court seeking a 10-day remand.
