Successful gardening of desert date at Bauphal
BAUPAL, PATUAKHALI, Apr 15: Toyubur Rahman, son of Anwar Ali Sikder of Ramnagar Village under Surjomoni Union in Bauphal Upazila of the district, has set up a desert date garden in the upazila.
He works at a private company in Dhaka. His friend Zakir Hossain works in a date garden in Saudi Arabia. Nearly five years back, he took initiative to cultivate desert date in Bangladesh. In 2016 he started gardening of the date in his village with his friend's advice.
His friend Zakir sent date seedlings to Bangladesh. Earlier, Toyubur had a nursery in Zirabo area of Savar where he planted date trees on five bighas of land. Besides, he planted more date plants on 10 katha of land in Ramnagar Village of Bauphal. At present there are 250 trees in the garden.
He said that he has about 20,000 date plants in his gardens, and each plant has sprouted this year.
There are 12 varieties of dates including Ajwa, Chukari, Barhi, Chafawa, Segai and Mashroop in his garden. Only three years after planting the seedlings, each tree has sprouted.
Toyobur said, "My friend sent about 300 trees from Saudi Arabia. After that I collected about 20,000 seedlings. I learned planting methods from my friend. I hope that my plants will give fruit soon."
He added, "I have taken the initiative of farming date plants of Saudi Arabia as a hobby. Now I am surprised to see the potential of the yield. If there is someone currently gardening date plants, I can provide him all kinds of support."
