Penalty For Green Line compensation
Transport owners want to join legal battle over
The Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association has filed a petition to become a party to the case in which the High Court has ordered Green Line to pay a crash victim Tk 5 million in compensation.
Tuesday's development comes a day before the end of the deadline for the payment set by the court.
The court kept the association's petition for hearing on Wednesday, Khandaker Shamsul Haque Reza, a lawyer for the writ petitioner who sought the compensation, said on Tuesday.
Former law minister Abdul Matin Khasru said the association had approached him to fight the case for them.
"It's a heartbreaking incident. I am on the victim's side. I can't switch sides by giving up my conscience," he said.
Green Line was yet to pay car driver Russell Sarkar, who lost his leg after being run over by a bus of the company on Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover in Dhaka's Jatrabarhi on Apr 28 last year.
The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader set the deadline on Apr 4 warning Green Line that all its buses would be seized and its ticket sales halted on Apr 11 if it failed to make the payment within the time. "They haven't contacted us yet," lawyer Reza said. -bdnews24.com
