Incidence of Youth Suicide in Bangladesh on the Rise
The young generation is supposed to live a life full of positive energies and aspirations. But when the youths put a full stop to their life deliberately at such an early phase, it is a tragedy of outsize proportion. The question is, what drives them to take a shocking decision like this? The increasing rate of youth suicides in Bangladesh has become a major issue to worry about.
If examined carefully, certain reasons can be identified. Youth is the best part and also the most vulnerable period of human life. Teenagers and youngsters need especial mental care during this period, which they do not get most of the time in our country. Our education system is designed in a way that they grow up with a wrong notion of success --- achieving good grades in examinations. Failing to get a good grade and being reprimanded for this reason can prompt them to take an extreme decision as can be seen in several cases. Unemployment problem and poverty also play their roles in causing depression among the youths. There are a lot of students studying in universities who come from poverty-stricken families. After the graduation, many of them do not get a job in spite of having a satisfactory result and cannot manage to support their families. The whole situation creates a heavy mental pressure on them and those who cannot tolerate it anymore take their own life. Another reason is conflict in personal relationships which leads them to take such an immature but tragic decision.
It is really sad that they think suicide is the only solution to all their problems. They seek freedom from all burdens in death. However, death cannot be a key to freedom rather it snatches away the opportunity to stand against all odds and overcome those. It is high time the family, society and the government work together to ensure healthy mental development of the youths. They need to get enough mental support from their family during difficult times. They must have personal space and freedom. We need expert psychologists and psychiatrists who will mainly listen to the depressed minds and try to figure out the exact problem accordingly. Besides, it is really important to change the pattern of our education system where our young generation fall victims to a sickly competition. A good cultural environment can ensure a sound mental health and change one's philosophy of life. It will help young people see the difficulties of life from a broader perspective. That is why Roy T. Bennett said in his The Light in the Heart, "Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create."
Every life is a precious gift from the Almighty Creator. Everyone needs to protect this gift carefully. Suicide is never expected from the youths who are supposed to be full of vigour and energy to overcome any obstacle. The young generation is the heart of a nation. Our country needs her young children to take care of her in future. Similarly, we need to take care of our youths now. We have to ensure a youth-friendly environment by taking proper initiatives where they will be able to inhale the full essence of life.
