Auto-rickshaw to run in two shifts in Rajshahi city

A view exchange meeting was held in Rajshahi to bring traffic under control and discipline in the auto-rickshaw movement at Rajshahi Metropolitan area.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed as chief guest at Nagar Bhaban hall room on Sunday.

Mayor Liton said, “The initiative has been taken to resolve the traffic congestions of the city corporation area. The policy has been created through negotiation to control auto-rickshaw movement in the city. I wish everyone's co-operation to implement this.”

He said there are about 20,000 auto-rickshaws in the city. Every day, they are making a huge traffic congestions in the city through coming out together. This is the high time to make a policy. Also, the Narrow-wheel-auto-rickshaw will not be allowed to operate in the city.

The policy was finalized in the meeting to reduce traffic congestion in the auto-rickshaw movement. According to the policy, owners and drivers will have to get separate registration card for the 6-seat auto-rickshaw and 2-seat fat-wheel-autorickshaw from 1 July.

According to the registration card number, the odd number of red color and the even number will be made of green color. The red color auto-rickshaw from 6am to 2pm and green color auto-rickshaw at 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm in the first week of the month will be operated. Both color’s auto-rickshaw will be operated in Friday’s holidays and every day from 10am to 6am.

According to the route plan, these vehicles will be transported in the metropolitan area. The drivers of autorickshaw would need to wear specific clothing to operate their vehicle. With the help of BRTA, the drivers will be trained in awareness of traffic law.

RCC's panel Mayor-1 and Ward councilor of 12, Surful Islam Babu chaired the meeting while RMP DC (traffic) Anirban Chakma, BRTA assistant director Kamrul Hasan were present as special guests.
