The High Court (HC) on Thursday issued a rule asking the authorities to explain as to why legal action should not be taken against beverage company Coca-Cola for using distorted and indecent Bangla words in its advertisements.

An HC bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and KM Kamrul Kader came up with the rule in response to a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Chandan Chandra Sarkar seeking a restriction on the use of the indecent words in Coca-Cola's advertisement. The bench issued another rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why the use of indecent words in the advertisement should not be declared illegal. In the petition filed on February 27, Chandan challenged the legality of using distasteful words like "Fafor", "Para", "Matha Nasto", "Ghutibaj", "Jinish", Jotil, and "Asthir" in the advertisements of Coca-Cola in Bangladesh.

Advocate Md Moniruzzaman Rana, who stood for the petitioner, said the Bangla words, which are used in Coco-Cola campaign, are objectionable and children are also getting used to these words.  The advertisements of Coca Cola were published and broadcast on both the print and electronic media. The words were also used on the labels of Coca-Cola bottles, the lawyer said.  The secretaries to the ministries of Information, Industries, Cultural Affairs, Law, Education, Home and the Director General of Bangla Academy, Inspector General of Police and Managing Director of International Beverages Private Limited (Coca-Cola) have been asked to respond to the rule in four weeks.
