Raintree Hotel rape
Main accused Shafat's bail cancelled
A Dhaka Court on Wednesday cancelled the bail of Shafat Ahmed, the main accused in the case for raping two private university students at a hotel in the capital's Banani, and sent him to jail.
Judge Khademul Kayes of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 passed the order. On November 29 last year, the court granted interim bail to Shafat, son of the owner of Apan Jewellers, on medical grounds.
Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu on January 15 submitted a petition before the tribunal, seeking cancellation of Shafat's bail. He said, "The main accused, Shafat, is now in sound health. If he moves freely, he will be involved in tampering with the witnesses. So, his bail should be cancelled." After a hearing, the court fixed February 13 for hearing the petition.
Obstructing Public Prosecutor, Shafat's lawyer Advocate ABM Khairul Islam Liton said he is sick as he has developed some stones in his kidney. Hearing both sides, the tribunal cancelled Shafat's bail and to sent him to jail.
