Give Tk 1 lakh to families of 5 road crash victims each: HC

The High Court (HC) on Monday asked the authorities concerned to give Tk 1 lakh in compensation to each of the families of five students who were killed in road accidents recently. The court order will have to be implemented in 15 days.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks why they shall not be directed to give Tk 50 lakh in compensation to each of the families of the victims.
The five victims are Ten-year-old Sayeeda of Dhaka, five-year-old Miraj Khan of Gazipur, 22-year-old Nusrat Chowdhury of Chattogram, nine-year-old Liza Akhter of Barishal and six- year-old Ahmed Rifat of Sylhet.
Sayeeda, Miraj, Liza and Rifat were students of different schools and Nusrat was student of Chittagong University.
A bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order after a hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.
"The court asked home, transport secretaries and chairman of BRTA to comply with the order," Barrister Md Abdul Halim, who moved the writ before the court, told journalists.
Children Charity Bangladesh Foundation and Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) filed the writ in public interest. A total of 18 officials, including home and transport secretaries, have been made respondents in the writ.
