Factory smoke damages environment in Noakhali

NOAKHALI, Jan 12: The black smoke coming out of Advanced Renewable Energy Industries at Dharmapur of Sadar Upazila is polluting environment seriously.
As a result, the surrounding trees have become faded, and the people are being affected with various diseases.
While visiting the area recently, it was found that the vegetables in an adjacent field have become faded. The land owner Shafiq Mia said, "I have cultivated cauliflower on two bighas of land this year. Though the yield was good first, now those are being damaged due to the factory smoke. As a result, I have incurred loss."
Another local people Abdur Rahman said he was affected with different skin diseases due to the black smoke coming out of the factory.
A local resident Belal Mia alleged that he protested the setup of the factory at a densely populated area, but factory owner Mosharraf Hossen tried to resist him using the influence of a local ruling party leader.
In this connection, Dharmapur Union Field Officer Shahab Uddin said, "I went to the area after getting the news. After I informed the matter to the factory manager, he assured me of stopping the production."
People of adjacent areas said their children can't sleep well due to the huge sound coming out of the factory always.
While visiting the factory, ash was found everywhere. The labourers were working in a risky condition.
Seeking anonymity, a labourer said useless tyres are brought to the factory, which are burnt at night to produce ash. The product is supplied to the brickfields where it is used instead of coal.
Sources said the factory was set up three years back when it was publicised that the ash will be produced using safe method. But after observing the factory, no safe method has been found.
While contacted, the factory owner Mosharraf Hossen said he will take steps so that the environment is not polluted.
In this connection, Deputy Director of District Environment Department Md Abdul Malek Mia said, "We have got complaint against the factory. We will take steps after investigation."
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ariful Islam Sarder said, "We will take steps if local people file complaint."
