RAJSHAHI, Jan 12: During the Rabi season, potato is known as the cash crop in Baghmara Upazila of the district. The local fields are full of potato trees of one to one and a half months old. Meanwhile, because of dense fog in the morning for last three to four days, the farmers are worried about the potato cultivation.

Due to favourable weather and soil, huge potatoes are being cultivated for last couple of years in Baghmara and its adjacent areas. Farmers are cultivating potato on more lands as they are getting better yield and price.
According to Upazila Agriculture Department, potato was cultivated on 17,000 hectares of land in the upazila this year.
In many areas, harvesting of early cultivated potato has started. Per maund potato is being sold at Taka 400 in wholesale market and per kg at Taka 15 in retail market.

Potato farmer Lutfar Rahman said the cultivation cost of potato is more due to increase of prices of fertilisers, insecticide and other materials. He became worried about the prices of potato.
Farmer Akbar Ali of Nandanpur Village said they sprayed various types of insecticides in the potato field so that pests can't attack the trees.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Rajibur Rahman said, "The weather has suddenly changed. In this situation, we recommended farmers to limit the use of insecticides. If fog is off, then there will be no problem."
