10 injured in RMG worker-police clash in Ashulia

At least 10 people were killed in a clash between garment workers and police in Ashulia's Jamgora area on Saturday.

Local people said the workers of 15 factories took to the street around 9am for the sixth consecutive day and tried to block Dhaka-Tangail highway.

A chase and counter chase took place when police tried to disperse them from the road.

The agitating workers threw brick chips to police and to the windows of the vehicles, leaving some passengers injured.

They also vandalised 15 vehicles.

Dhaka-1 industrial police SP Sana Saminur Rahman said additional police and eight platoon of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members were deployed in the area.

Meanwhile, workers blockade Mirpur-14 and staged demonstration there.

According to bdnews24.com reports, the new wage structure in the readymade garments sector is to take effect from January.

According to workers, they are not receiving wages according to the new structure. Some workers, they say, are receiving even less than they did before.

The government formed a committee to re-evaluate the wage structure soon after the workers took to the streets to demand fair pay. The committee met on Thursday for the first time.

Committee head Labour Secretary Afroza Khan has given assurances that it will review the allegations regarding the three wage grades coming from workers.

State Minister for Labour Monnujan Sufian has promised that none of the workers will receive a lower wage than they did before.
