57 candidates boycott poll citing irregularities

As many as 57 candidates of different political parties, including Jatiya Oikyafront, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) led by 20-party alliance and two independent contestants, have boycotted the 11th parliamentary elections citing irregularities, including vote rigging, ballot stuffing and capturing of polling centres allegedly by the ruling party men.
They alleged that the ruling party men captured polling stations, rigged votes and barred voters from casting votes in their respective centres.
Of the candidates, 31 are from Jatiya Oikyafront, 21 from Jamaat-e-Islami, three from Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) led by 20-party alliance and two independent contestants. Jatiya Oikyafront's Iqbal Hossein of Pabna-5, Md Abdul Alim of Bagerhat-4, Ameer Ejaz Khan of Khulna-1, Rakibul Islam Bakul of Khulna-3, Azizul Bari Helal of Khulna-4, Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam of Rajbari-1, Abu Hena of Rajshahi-4, Sabina Yasmin of Natore-2, Md Dauder Mahmud of Natore-3, Md Habibur Rahman of Pabna-4, Romana Morshed Kanak Chapa of Sirajganj-1, Md Azharul Islam Mannan of Narayanganj-3, Md Mofiqul Hasan Tripti of Jashore-1, M Iqbal Hossain of Mymensingh-3, Mohammad Zakir Hossain of Mymensingh-5, Shams Uddin Ahmed of Mymensingh-6, Khurram Khan Chowdhury of Mymensingh-9, Fakhar Uddin Ahmed of Mymensingh-11, Afzal H Khan of Mymensingh-1, AHM Khalequzzaman of Mymensingh-8, Mohammad Shahjahan of Noakhali-4, Fahim Chowdhury of Sherpur-2, Mahmudul Haque Rubel of Sherpur-3, JM Nurur Rahman of Barishal-4, Rumana Mahmud of Sirajganj-2, Abdul Manan Talukder of Sirajganj-3, Masud Rana of Bagerhat-1, MA Salam of Bagerhat-2, AKM Nasir Uddin of Shariatpur-1, Shafiqur Rahman Kiron of Shariatpur-2 and M Samsuzzoha Khan of Naogaon-2 boycotted the polls.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, who boycotted the polls, are Syed Abdullah Md Taher of Cumilla-11, Mia Golam Parwar of Khulna-5, Md Abul Kalam Azad of Khulna-6, Moniruzzaman Montu of Nilphmari-2, Md Azizul Islam of Nilphmari-3, Abdul Hakim of Thakurgaon-2, Mohammad Abdul Wadud Sheikh of Bagerhat-3, Md Abu Hanif of Dinajpur-1, Anwarul Islam of Dinajpur-6, Golam Rabbani of Rangpur-5, Majedur Rahman Sharker of Gaibandha-1, Rafiqul Islam Khan of Sirajganj-4, Prof Motiur Rahman of Jhenidah-3, Abu Sayed Mohammad Shahadat Hossain of Jashore-2, Abdul Khaleque of Shatkhira-2, Gazi Nazrul Islam of Shatkhira-4, Shamim Sayedee of Pirojpur-1, ANM Shamsul Islam of Chattogram-15, Shafiqur Rahman of Dhaka-15, Hamidur Rahman Azad of Cox's Bazar-2 and Nurul Islam Bulbul of Chapainawabganj-3. They were contesting the election with BNP's electoral symbol 'sheaf of paddy'.
20-Party Alliance's candidates, who boycotted the polls, are Bangladesh Jatiya Party's (BJP) Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partha of Dhaka-17, Somnath Dey of Bagerhat-4 and Syed Mahmud Morshed of Mymensingh-10. independent candidates Salma Islam of Dhaka-1 and Ashraful Hosen Alam alias Hero Alam of Bogura-4 have also boycotted the polls raising various allegations.
